Master of Science in Education (Grades 7-12)

  • This program is for secondary teaching (middle school, junior high, or high school: grades 7-12), which New York state certification calls adolescent education.
  • Stand out from your peers and be more employable with this inclusive (special education) adolescence dual certification — showing you have the skills to understand, support, and challenge students in grades 7-12.
  • Learn to differentiate curriculum and instruction to meet diverse needs, build supportive relationships with secondary students, use instructional and assistive technology, and collaborate with other educators.
  • Benefit from Nazareth’s accomplished faculty, challenging curriculum, and innovative approaches to learning, which have given the College’s inclusive education programs a long, proud history of transforming dedicated learners into well-prepared, effective educators.
  • Choose the right master’s degree program for you — whether you have no previous teaching certification, general-education content certification (grade 7-12), or certification for teaching younger grades.

Program Options

Initial Certification (48 credits)

Program is ideal for:

  • Someone not yet certified to teach.
  • Includes recent college graduates or career changers who hold a content-specific degree or major/minor/concentration of 30 credit hours in biology, chemistry, physics, English, math, history/social studies, French, German, Italian, or Spanish and want to become certified to teach that subject and to teach students with disabilities, grades 7-12.

Additional Certification at the Same Developmental Level (36 credits)

Program is ideal for teachers already certified in adolescence education who want to add certification to teach students with disabilities (grades 7-12, generalist).

Additional Certification, Changing Developmental Level (39 credits)

Program is ideal for:

  • Teachers certified in general education at a younger grade level who meet the content area prerequisites and want adolescence education certification in that subject.
  • This program provides initial certification in both the content area for this secondary education level (grades 7-12) and in teaching students with disabilities grades 7-12 (generalist).

Professional Certification (36 credits)

Program is ideal for:

  • Teachers who currently hold initial certifications in both a content area (grades 7-12) and in teaching students with disabilities (grades 7-12), or in childhood education (grades 1-6) and teaching students with disabilities (grades 1-6).
  • This program will deepen your knowledge and skills to create specially designed instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners and includes the opportunity to add one or more annotations/extensions/specializations to your certification (severe or multiple disabilities, bilingual education, gifted education, autism, deafness).
  • This program is undergoing re-registration.

Career Information

  • Dual-certification in both general education and special education grades 7-12 certification positions you well for employment.
  • Graduates work as content area teachers, well prepared for diverse classrooms, as well as consultant teachers, resource room teachers, integrated co-teachers, and self-contained special education classroom teachers.
