Nick Morandi

Biography

Composer Nick Morandi’s music has been performed all over the world, in venues as far-ranging as the beautiful Auer Hall at Indiana University to a small stone basement and a performance hall in Italy. His song for soprano and string quartet, Alone, was premiered at the soundSCAPE Festival in July 2017. He was awarded a commission for OSSIA New Music's 2016-17 season, resulting in Hyperion Songs, a song cycle for voice and ensemble, which premiered in Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music in October 2016. His work for chamber orchestra, Circles in Squares, was premiered in November 2015 at the Eastman School of Music. His string quartet Actor won the 2014 Kuttner String Quartet Composition Prize at Indiana University, and received its premiere by the Azalea Quartet in February of 2015. His first work for wind ensemble, Mountain City, was given its world premiere by the University of Utah Wind Ensemble, directed by Scott Hagen, in April 2012.

An avid clarinetist, Mr. Morandi has premiered works of his own for clarinet and bass clarinet. He also served as clarinetist and bass clarinetist with the Indiana University New Music Ensemble under the direction of David Dzubay, and premiered and recorded many pieces by esteemed guest composers, faculty, students, and alumni in his time there. Most recently, he was an ensemble and solo performer at soundSCAPE 2017. While at Indiana University, he was two-time recipient of the second prize for the Mrs. Hong Pham Memorial Recognition Award for New Music Performance for his contributions to premiering and recording works of his own and his fellow composers. As a member of the Forward 4 Clarinet Quartet, he was a guest performer at the 2011 International ClarinetFest in Los Angeles, California, and served as a featured performer at the 2012 International ClarinetFest in Assisi, Italy.

Mr. Morandi is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at the Eastman School of Music, and holds a M.M. degree from Indiana University and a B.Mus. from the University of Utah. In his spare time, he enjoys reading short stories, watching old movies, and visiting his mountainous hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah.
