Julie Detweiler, clarinet

Dr. Julie Schumacher Detweiler is a classical freelance clarinetist who has been described as delivering her musical style with "flair." She has performed with orchestras around the country, including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orlando Philharmonic, the Tallahassee Symphony, the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, the Garden State Philharmonic and the New England Symphonic Ensemble, among others. In addition, Dr. Detweiler has participated in the Aspen Music School and Festival, the Rome Festival Orchestra and the Bard Conductor’s Institute, the latter as a member of the orchestra.

 

An avid chamber musician, Dr. Detweiler was a founding member of both the Renegade Trio and Sonic Winds woodwind quintet, the latter of which advanced to the Semi-Finals of the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. Her most recent chamber music collaborations include performances of Copland’s Appalachian Spring with Cordancia (Rochester, NY) and Mozart's Gran Partita with the Harlem Chamber Players as well as independent performances of Mozart's Kegelstatt Trio, Muczynski's Duo for Flute and Clarinet and Schubert's Shepherd On The Rock.

 

As an educator, Dr. Detweiler has served as a New York Philharmonic Teaching Artist and has taught in the pre-college programs at both the Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School. In 2011, she was appointed clarinet faculty member for the Affetti Summer Music Festival in Anchorage, Alaska. She has maintained an active private-teaching studio for seventeen years.

 

Dr. Detweiler received her Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet performance from the State University of NewYork at Potsdam and her Master of Music degree at Northwestern University. She completed her Doctor of Music degree in clarinet performance at Florida State University where her duties as a graduate teaching assistant included teaching undergraduate and graduate clarinetists, teaching the clarinet methods class and coaching undergraduate chamber ensembles. Her major teachers include Russell Dagon, Dr. Frank Kowalsky, Mark Nuccio, Theodore Oien, and Dr. Alan Woy. Dr. Detweiler currently resides in the Rochester, NY area with her husband, David, and their son.

 

Michelle Huang, pianist

 

A native of Taiwan, Michelle Huang has performed widely as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborative artist throughout the U.S. as well as in the Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland, and Taiwan. She has appeared as guest artist in numerous recitals and has given lectures, workshops, and master classes throughout Florida as well as in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and Taipei, Taiwan. Her solo performances were broadcast on WUOT by the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. A frequently collaborator with other musicians, Dr. Huang has performed extensively with various chamber ensembles and was the pianist for the Mary L’Engle Ensemble, the chamber group-in-residence at Friday Musicale in Jacksonville, FL.

 

Dr. Huang was on the faculty of Walter States Community College and Lincoln Memorial University. She has most recently served as Assistant Professor of Piano at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, FL. She was also on the faculty for summer piano programs at the University of North Florida and Florida State University.

A strong advocate of mind and body connection and overall musicians’ health, Dr. Huang has conducted numerous performance anxiety workshops in various universities as well as music conferences to help musicians understand and cope with anxiety related to performing.  

 

Dr. Huang received her Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her Master of Music degree at the University of Tennessee. She completed her Doctor of Music degree in piano performance at the Florida State University. Her principle teachers include Barbara Rowan, David Northington, and Read Gainsford.

 

Dr. Huang currently resides in Richmond, VA with her husband. In addition to maintaining an active teaching studio at home, she also teaches at the Greater Richmond School of Music and the Music Tree.
