Dr. Nancy Klein, Choral Director

 

Dr. Nancy Klein is a native of Virginia, having received her early education in Fairfax County. She earned the B.S. in Music Education from the University of Richmond (cum laude) in 1976, the M.M.E in Vocal Performance from EKU (honors) in 1982 and the Ph.D. in Music from NYU (valedictorian) in 1986. While in New York she served as the Assistant Director and Acting Director of the NYU Choral Program.  She has pursued post-graduate studies at Northern Arizona University and Westminster Choir College. Dr. Klein has studied conducting and performed as a soprano with Eric Ericson, Robert Shaw, John deRevere and James Erb. She has performed in Alice Tully Hall, Rockefeller Center, Carnegie Hall, Town Hall and the National Arts Club in New York City.

 

Dr. Klein has directed the ODU Choral Department since 1986, premiering the works of Daniel Pinkham, Adolphus Hailstork, Steven Melillo and John Dayve. Under her direction, the University Choir and Diehn Chorale have performed in St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, Scotland; Carnegie Hall; St. Patrick's Cathedral; and Tokyo, Japan. The Monarch Men's Trio performed at the European Music Educator's Conference in Italy in 2006, where Dr. Klein was a featured speaker.

 

Dr. Klein is currently Graduate Program Director and Director of Choirs in the Department of Music at Old Dominion University, where she directs the University Concert Choir, Diehn Chorale, and teaches graduate and undergraduate conducting.  Dr. Klein has directed the ‘Sound of America’ choir, touring Switzerland, Italy, France, Austria and Luxembourg over the last several summers.
