Please join us for a discussion of copyright, intellectual property, and what composers, performers, and arts administrators should know about these important issues. Topics will include:

  • How does licensing work for composers? For performers? For concert presenters?
  • What is a PRO? What can it do (and not do) for a composer?
  • Publishing: what is self-publishing?; pros and cons of self-publishing vs. using a third-party publisher
  • Performance rights vs. other kinds of copyright
  • Live performances vs. broadcast (radio/TV) and internet performances (YouTube, Spotify, Pandora, Netflix) – how and why they are accounted for differently
  • Differences between BMI and ASCAP – which is right for you? (hint: they’re both good, just join one already)
  • Agreements: commissions, premieres – know what you’re agreeing to, and what you might be signing away…
  • And more!
