Panel Discussion: Casting: At What Cost?

How can the young performer remain safe and empowered and still create successful career? Let's begin the conversation.

The Theatre and Dance Department is hosting a panel discussion in response to current events that have brought to light some of the dangers young actors, dancers, and singers face as they begin and continue in the entertainment industry.

Our Panelists: 

Hettie Barnhill, is the professor of musical theater at Nazareth College, a Broadway actress, a director, a choreographer, and the founder of ‘Movement & Characters’ (a school dedicated to providing industry level, professional classes in the performing arts for students of all ages, levels, and financial backgrounds). Recently nominated for a 2017 New York Innovative Theater Award for Outstanding Choreography, Hettie has performed on Broadway in the production's “Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark”, Tony Award winning “FELA! (original cast), and the Tony award nominated “Leap Of Faith” (original cast). Since 2006, Hettie has been involved with A Long Walk Home, Inc., a nonprofit organization that uses art therapy and the visual and performing arts to document, to educate, and to bring about social change for survivors of rape and violence.

MaryAnn Bush, is a Professor of Psychology at Nazareth College with a specialization in Counseling Psychology. Research interests include Identity Formation in Women and issues related to objectification, body image, and sexual victimization.

Nicolette Hart is a vocal coach for the Theatre and Dance Department at Nazareth College. Her professional experience includes: BROADWAY- RENT, Wedding Singer, Legally Blonde, Million Dollar Quartet. Off Broadway/Tours include-Cabaret, Chix 6, RENT, The Civil War, and Grease. TV/film credits include Prescient, Nurse Jackie, L&O, Lipstick Jungle, and Cherry Crush. In 2013, Nicolette opened NicoletteHartStudios, a private vocal/acting studio in Rochester. She has also been touring the world with Bette Midler since 2003. SAG/AFTRA/AEA.

Karen Vicks is the Nazareth College Title IX Coordinator.  As Title IX Coordinator, Karen is responsible for overseeing the College's centralized review, investigation, and resolution of reports of sexual assault and sexual harassment.  She also works across campus to develop and implement educational outreach programs for students, faculty, and staff.
