Latinx Heritage Month Speaker: Reyna Grande

September 18, 2018 5 – 6:30 p.m.

Come hear the compelling, inspiring life experience of Reyna Grande, author of The Distance Between Us, her memoir on immigrating from Mexico as a child and overcoming incredible obstacles.

This coming-of-age story follows her and her family through poverty, children being left with a negligent grandmother in rural Mexico, crossing the border without legal paperwork, and navigating the complexities of living as undocumented immigrants while dealing with the ravages of alcoholism.

Yet Grande became the first in her family to earn a college degree, went on to earn an MFA in creative writing, and became an award-winning author.

The author and her book also were chosen by Writers & Books in Rochester as the "Rochester Reads 2018" selection, prompting many people in the area to read and discuss this memoir.
