President's Civic Engagement Awards

Come celebrate with your classmates, faculty, Nazareth employees, and community organizations as we present the 2018-2019 President's Civic Engagement Awards.

The President's Community Service Award for Students recognizes students who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to service, either to our own Nazareth College community or the greater community this academic year. Recipients:

The President's Community Service Award for Faculty, Staff, and Community Partner recognizes faculty and staff who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to service, either to our own Nazareth College community or the greater community. The award also recognizes the integral role our community partners play in co-educating our students and supporting them in their community engagement efforts. Recipients:

  • Faculty: Cynthia Kerber Gowan, Ph.D., faculty in School of Education & faculty liaison for LifePrep@Naz
  • Faculty: Hettie Barnhill, assistant professor in Theatre and Dance
  • Staff: Jazzmyn Ivery-Robinson, coordinator in Human Resources

Community Partner: Generation Two -- accepted by Bruce Gilberg, Ph.D., Melanie Mroz, & Melissa Panara

Partners for Learning Award is given to one senior from the Partners for Learning Program selected on the basis of exemplary commitment to the program, outstanding leadership, and contributions to the vision and excellence of Partners for Learning. Recipient:

  • Bethany Shaw '19, Toxicology

Jessica Shackelton Maclay Partners for Serving Award honors the life and community service legacy of the Nazareth social work alumna who went on to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA worker and was a founding coordinator of Partners for Serving (PFS) and co-founder of Homework Help (now Nazareth College Connection). Tragically, Jessica passed away in 2011. The award goes to a key senior in the PFS program. Recipient:

  • Natalie Tyce '19, Music Therapy

Service-Learning Champion Award recognizes a faculty member who creates learning experiences for Nazareth College students that are based on strong reciprocal partnerships, where the needs of the community are addressed and students develop knowledge and skills connected to their academic course learning outcomes. Recipient:

  • Mark A. Primus, Ph.D., Clinical Assistant Professor in Social Work

Dr. Marie Watkins Community Partner Award recognizes a community partner who creates learning experiences for Nazareth College students that are based on strong reciprocal partnerships, where the needs of the community are addressed while students develop knowledge and skills connected to their academic course learning outcomes. This award is given in honor of Dr. Marie Watkins, a community youth development professor and the founding director of the Center for Service-Learning. Recipients:

  • IBERO-American Action League's Youth Services Department's ASPIRA Youth Leadership Program – accepted by Mr. Shalym Nater, program coordinator
  • Our Lady of Guadalupe Church – accepted by Fr. Jesus Flores and Sr. Lucila Romero

Sr. Kathy Weider, SSJ, Center for Spirituality Award is given to a graduating senior who significantly contributed to the furtherance of interfaith dialogue, contemplative practice, and social justice in the Nazareth campus community and whose work has been informed by their own deep spirituality. The award is named after Weider, who served as director of campus ministry at Nazareth College from 1984-2000. Recipient:

  • Alana Carter '19, Anthropology and French double major, with Women's Studies and Interfaith Studies double minor

LGBTQ+ Education and Advocacy Award is given to a student, staff, or faculty member who have had a positive impact on the LGBTQ+ community on campus through commitment to diversity of sexuality, gender identity, expression, orientation, and gender presentation by their actions, and by providing educational programs, allyship, and creating safe spaces, as well as supporting and promoting policies that center on LGBTQ+ matters. Recipients:

  • Anna Goings '20, communication sciences and disorders
  • Lydia Seright, mental health counselor in Health and Counseling Services

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards are given to students, staff, and/or faculty members who demonstrate a commitment to the moral and spiritual values of nonviolence, peace, and justice. The awardees have created opportunities that promote campus diversity and acceptance by emulating Dr. King's spirit of forgiveness and his legacy of unconditional love. Recipients:

  • Anita Cooper-Molinero, Ph.D., clinical assistant professor in social sork
  • Whitney Thomas '20, public health and legal studies

Ms. Gaynelle Wethers Award is in honor of Wethers, who was the founding director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Nazareth College. She was instrumental in increasing racial diversity at Nazareth while establishing close ties between Nazareth and the larger Rochester community. The award is given to a student, staff, or faculty member who has worked toward enhancing racial diversity at the College while developing and maintaining a close relationship with the greater Rochester community. Recipient:

  • Olajiwon McCadney, director for diversity and inclusive excellence education

President's Inclusive Excellence Award is given to an individual or department that has demonstrated commitment to advancing institutional goals for equity, diversity, and inclusion as defined in the Nazareth College Statement for Diversity and Inclusion. The individual or department promotes inclusivity by creating programs (curricular and/or co-curricular) that encourage meaningful engagement within and across difference. These qualities are reflected in their daily practices (i.e. teaching, mentoring, programming, work, support, and advocacy) that aim to create a sense of belonging for everyone in the Nazareth community. Recipient:

  • Idalia Blake '19, music therapy major, Spanish minor

Global Engagement Award recognizes an undergraduate or graduate student who exemplifies the values of service, solidarity, and effective cross-cultural engagement in an international context. Recipient:

  • Alexis Blydenburgh '17 & '19G, whose undergraduate degree was in Spanish and inclusive education with a minor in dance.

The (national) Newman Civic Fellowship Award honors inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Each college and university nationally may nominate only one student for this award. The Nazareth student who will participate in this national fellowship:

  • Harrison Kane '20, legal studies

Alumni Association Senior Award recognizes a graduating senior who has made outstanding contributions that benefit both the Nazareth community and the community at large. Honorees demonstrate a dedication to the values espoused by Nazareth College: a concern for and commitment to underserved individuals; ethical personal and professional behavior; leadership; and living a life of meaning. Recipient:

  • Juliana Joyce '19, music therapy
