It was as if the<\span><br \><span>songwriters stood on the West Side of Manhattan to look out over the<\span><br \><span>rest of the country to describe America to the Americans\, not its<\span><br \><span>geography or politics but its heart. Like his new book\, City Songs and<\span><br \><span>American Life\, 1900-1950\, Michael Lasser’s talk gives his take on the<\span><br \><span>music he’s lived with for more than half a century to answer the<\span><br \><span>question: what makes an urban song urban when it never mentions the<\span><br \><span>city. Following the talk\, Lasser will be signing copies of his book.<\span><\p>
