He is from El Paso\, Texas\, and earned his BA at Princeton University and PhD at the University of California\, Berkeley. He is the author of Backroads Pragmatists (University of Pennsylvania Press\, 2014)\, which examined political ideas about democracy and race in 20th-century Mexican and U.S. societies.<\p>
