Nazareth College Students Receive Prestigious 2016-17 Fulbright Awards

Published April 14, 2016

Nazareth College is proud to announce that the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board has selected Mary Lawrence, Celia Bradley, and Nicole Charette as recipients of the 2016-2017 U.S. Student Fulbright award. In the last five years, there have been 18 Fulbrights awarded to Nazareth College students. In February 2016, the Chronicle of Higher Education recognized Nazareth among the top producers of Fulbright U.S. student awards in its category of master's institutions.

Mary Lawrence of Ogdensburg, N.Y., (left in photo) graduated from Nazareth in December 2015 with a double major in French and German Languages and Literatures, and an Honors program minor. She has been selected to teach English in Germany.  She is currently working at Bausch + Lomb as a bilingual customer service representative in Canada Customer Service. Upon her return, she would enjoy thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, and eventually going to graduate school, ideally in Germany.

Celia Bradley of Rochester, N.Y., (middle in photo) graduated from Nazareth College in 2014 with a degree in International Relations with a minor in history, and she will be teaching English in an elementary or junior high school in Taiwan. Currently an employee of Nazareth’s Residential Life department, she hopes to return to the U.S. to study international development with a concentration in gender studies and East Asia/Pacific studies or a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) degree program.

Nicole Charette of Westfield, Mass., (right in photo) has been chosen to assist English teachers in secondary schools and lead English activities in Malaysia. She will graduate in May with her degrees in Inclusive Early Childhood/Childhood Education and Sociology. Upon her return, Charette hopes to attend graduate school for TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and aspires to be an ESL teacher in an elementary school.

Nazareth College would also like to recognize the work of Fulbright Program Advisor Mark Madigan.

Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Fulbright Program’s objective is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the rest of the world. Sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Fulbright Program is America’s flagship international education exchange. Approximately 279,500 “Fulbrights,” 105,400 from the United States and 174,100 from other countries, have participated in the Program since its inception more than 50 years ago.
