Durant-Jones Wins National Cultural Pluralism Award

Published September 26, 2016

Lisa Durant-Jones, professor of Speech Pathology at Nazareth College, is being recognized nationally with the Cultural Pluralism Award from the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (ASAHP).  This award is given to recognize an individual who is involved in furthering the principle of cultural pluralism in an academic setting by demonstrating leadership through promoting it.  She will accept the award at the ASAHP dinner and awards ceremony at the Annual Conference on October 19in New Orleans.

Nazareth College School of Health and Human Services Dean Brigid Noonan nominated Durant-Jones, citing her leadership and commitment to making the subject of infusing diversity and inclusion an important part of the school’s curriculum.  “She is passionate about how students, faculty, and staff need to have an understanding of what diversity means not only to entities, but to the personnel they serve.  This passion and leadership assists in making positive connections between what is taught in the classroom and application in the field.”

Durant-Jones has been teaching at Nazareth since 1996.  She was named as an American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) diversity champion in 2009, and is currently the co-chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity and Inclusion at Nazareth--which is charged with developing a strategic plan to assist the College in infusing cultural competencies into the climate and culture.
