The Nazareth College Department of Music and the brass faculty, along with guest trumpeter Herbert Smith, are pleased to present Nazareth College Brass Day 2016 on Saturday, October 29.

Morning sessions include group breathing and instrument-specific masterclasses with members of the Wilmot Brass Ensemble. The afternoon will feature a rehearsal, a clinic with Herbert Smith, the day’s final concert, and more. All events are free and open to the public, and all ability levels are encouraged to attend.

Herbert Smith (jazz and classical musician, teacher, composer) came to Rochester in 1987 to attend the Eastman School of Music, where he got his bachelors in music education. Upon graduating he acquired the second trumpet position with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and now holds the third trumpet seat. Smith has performed at Carnegie Hall; regularly plays with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chautauqua Institute Symphony Orchestra, and the Portland Maine Symphony; and performs as a soloist and chamber musician around the greater Rochester Area. He also has a jazz CD entitled The Trumpet Shall Sound (2007) featuring his Jazz Quintet playing reinterpreted standards along with his original compositions. Smith’s jazz trio—Freedom Trio, which has performed at the Rochester International Jazz Festival—taps into many music forms including jazz, classical, Indian, and popular styles. Smith has played with notable musicians including, Wynton Marsalis, Aretha Franklin, and Ben Folds, and once subbed for Doc Severenson at Eastman Theater.
