Paula Brown Earns National 2016 Visions Award

Published April 07, 2017

Nazareth College’s Paula Brown, professor of speech-language pathology in Communication Sciences and Disorders, is the first recipient of the Visions Global Empowerment 2016 “Outstanding Dedication to Service” award. Brown was instrumental in building a partnership between Visions and Nazareth College, which has resulted in two service-learning trips to Ethiopia to date, with a focus on partnering with the Deaf community & allies in Bahir Dar. She has also voluntarily consulted on the introduction of a speech program (currently under development) at the Visions Model Deafness Center in Bahir Dar.  She has also supported Visions events in the Rochester area.

Brown has provided exemplary leadership before, during, and after the actual service-learning trips — making sure students felt prepared, engaged, and committed to not only learning about and experiencing the country, but also feeling personally invested in the ongoing community development work to help empower the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in Ethiopia.

“She has demonstrated true commitment to her students in ensuring those who choose to visit Ethiopia have a rich and meaningful experience,” said Visions Executive Director Greg Buie. “Visions wishes to extend its gratitude to Dr. Brown for her efforts to-date, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Nazareth College.”
