Visiting Scholar Babacar Fall Enters Nazareth Classrooms to Share African Life, Culture, and Religion
Nazareth College’s Foreign Languages and Literatures Department is hosting a humanities scholar and consultant to United Nations and the World Bank, Babacar Fall, Ph.D., from the University of Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar (UCAD), Senegal, for a series of talks open to the public along with seven days of classroom visits. Nazareth and the Rochester community will benefit from Professor Fall’s visit, as he will share his perspectives on culture, anthropology, education, health, and socio-politics as they relate to West Africa, and Africa as a whole.
On Tuesday, April 10th, 2018 from 7- 8 p.m., in Golisano Academic Center, Room 211, Fall will be leading a discussion on Social Entrepreneurship: Strategies for Success in Africa, Europe and North America with Nazareth professors Mireille Le Breton, Jennifer Leigh, Adam Lewandowski, and Honorary Consul of France Mr. Pascal Soares. On Wednesday, April 11th 2018 from 7 - 8 p.m., in Golisano Academic Center, Room 133, Fall will be in conversation on Youth and Global Migrations: Human Rights, Education and Social Protection with Nazareth professors Otieno Kisiara, Esperanza Roncero, and Shirley Sommers. Mireille Le Breton will be moderating the discussion.
Fall will also meet with students across disciplines throughout his week-long stay on campus. He will discuss topics such as Life, Culture and Religion in Senegal and Africa (Dr. Shafiq’s class); African Perspectives on Racism in America (Dr. Devparna’s class); Girls’ Education in West Africa (Dr. Kisiara’s class); African History and Identity as Influenced by Colonialism and Slavery (Dr. Islam’s class); Education and Prevention of HIV/AIDS (Dr. Maher and Dr. Kisiara’s classes); Colonial Legacy in West Africa (Dr. Kramer’s class); Slavery and Revolutions in Senegal in the 1700s (Dr. Cordova’s class); West African Women Writing (Dr. Le Breton’s class).

Fall is professor at the FASTEF School of Education at the University of Cheikh Anta Diop, which is one of the leading institutions of higher learning in Africa. He is the Superintendent of Education for Senegal, in charge of public middle schools and high schools. He is a former Stanford University Humanities Center Fellow, and also a former Humboldt Fellow in Berlin, Germany. Fall is also a consultant for the United Nations Funds for Population Activities (UNFPA) and the World Bank. He is the director of the newly established Advanced Studies Institute in Saint-Louis, Senegal, and he is coordinating a Senegalese NGO (GEEP-Groupe pour l’Etude et l’Enseignement de la Population) specialized in population and education. Fall has worked on developing and assessing school health and nutritions policies, youth sexual and reproductive health programs (Zero School Pregnancy Campaign), including HIV/AIDS, and family life education programs. He has also established many relations in Senegal, Chad, The Gambia, Guinea, Mali, Ivory Coast, and Burundi, to advance youth development by promoting and establishing programs in schools in the Sahel countries.
