In-person and Remote Work

If I’m transitioning from remote work to on-campus work, what should I do to get ready?

What do I do each day when arriving at work on campus?

  • Before coming to campus, complete the COVID screening online.
  • Once a day when you're on campus, stop at a kiosk and scan your green badge result (QR code) from your screening.

I work in an office with several other people. Is it safe for me to be that close to others?

Nazareth follows guidance from New York State, such as keeping workplace density to certain capacity levels, such as 50%, by having departments manage scheduling to not have more than half of faculty or staff on campus at any given time. This alleviates some of the exposure risk for shared office space. In addition, the College has implemented safety measures, which includes set protocol for cleaning and disinfecting, social distancing and face covering policies, and physical barriers such as Plexiglass in some areas. Each department manager or chairperson is responsible for assessing open work environments.

What if I have an underlying health condition and I am concerned about working on campus?

Staff and faculty members who believe they fall in the group of higher risk individuals and who wish to seek a temporary reasonable accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), should contact HR at to set up a time to discuss available options. According to the CDC, individuals with certain health conditions may have a higher risk for COVID-19 infection. These conditions and other risk factors may include:

  • Adults aged 65 years and older
  • Asthma (moderate-to-severe)
  • Chronic lung disease
  • Diabetes
  • Serious heart conditions
  • Chronic kidney disease being treated with dialysis
  • Severe obesity
  • Being immunocompromised

As a manager, am I able to send an employee home if they become ill while at work?

Yes. According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if employees have symptoms consistent with either COVID-19 or the seasonal flu during a pandemic outbreak, you can require them to stay home or to return home after they arrive at work.

I don’t have an underlying condition, but I live with someone that does. Am I able to work remotely?

It is important that the college reduce density when possible to do so. The New York State Department of Health has provided guidance recommending those employees whose work is able to be conducted remotely to continue to work remotely, and only necessary staff and faculty return to campus to work. The determination regarding your ability to continue to work remotely will be made by your department leader and based on the impact to students, your work responsibilities, the ability of the department to reallocate resources, compliance matters, and safety concerns.

Can I choose to continue to work remotely?

While the health, safety, and contributions of all staff and faculty members are equally valued, the reality is that not all work can be performed remotely. Certain jobs or aspects of a job must be performed on campus. Other jobs or aspects of jobs can be performed remotely. Department leaders will work with employees to determine who will perform their jobs remotely and who will be required to be on campus. The determination regarding your ability to continue to work remotely will be made based on criteria such as the impact to students, your work responsibilities, the ability of the department to reallocate resources, compliance matters, and safety concerns. 

I have children at home because of school closures and cancelled summer programs. Am I able to work remotely to accommodate my child care needs?

There is a possibility that you may continue to work remotely. Certain job responsibilities must be performed on campus while other work can be performed remotely. Discuss your needs with your manager. The determination regarding your ability to continue to work remotely will be made based on criteria such as the impact to students, your work responsibilities, the ability of the department to reallocate resources, compliance matters, and safety concerns. 

I am having technology issues at home. Are resources available through the College that could help me be more productive?

Yes, ITS has options available to help you. Check with your manager regarding your technology needs before contacting ITS. If you are having issues with VPN or your Google accounts, contact the Technology and Media Service Desk at 585-389-2111 or email

If you are having issues accessing the internet, the IT department has set up an Internet hot spot on campus. Call the help desk before coming to campus about the availability and location of the parking lot hot spot.

Why does my colleague get to work from home and I have to work on campus?

There may be multiple reasons why a colleague is continuing to work from home. Reasons may include: the individual’s need for a temporary reasonable accommodation under the ADA, to support the New York State guideline to keep the campus density reduced and/or that person’s ability to perform the essential functions (non-student facing) of their position remotely. The determination regarding who works remotely and who works on campus is made by the department leader and is based on criteria such as the impact to students, work responsibilities, the ability of the department to reallocate resources, compliance matters, and safety concerns. 

I have an upcoming medical leave (non-COVID related) or appointment(s) and am working remotely, what do I do?

If you need to take a medical leave, contact Human Resources to initiate your short term disability leave. Employees who are working remotely are eligible for the same leave programs (sick time, family sick, vacation, short term disability, paid family leave and family medical leave) as those who are working on campus. 

I have not been able to take my vacation time this year. When will I lose it?

For 2020, employees have until the end of December 2020 to take vacation time before accruals over one year are forfeited. At the end of December, vacation time over your one-year accrual rollover limit (not including your accrual for September - December) will be forfeited. Please work with your manager to schedule your time off. 

I (or my dependent child) have received an order of mandatory or precautionary order of quarantine or isolation for COVID-19 that was issued by New York State, the Department of Health, or my local board of health. What should I do?

Please do not report to campus. Notify Human Resources as soon as possible. If you are able to work remotely, you will be asked to continue to do so during your period of quarantine or isolation. If you are unable to work due to becoming symptomatic, you have leave time options available to you (employee sick time/short term disability or family sick/paid family leave). In addition, NYS has passed legislation providing paid COVID sick leave for employees who are to isolate or quarantine due to an order of quarantine issued by the State, Department of Health or local board of health. If you have been quarantined by a medical professional, you can request an order of quarantine from the state.

What should I do if I see faculty, staff, or students not complying with the safety provisions the College has put into place?

As we continue our efforts for a safe and healthy workplace, there will be times when someone may not follow the guidance or may be unaware of the safety expectations. In a respectful and supportive manner, you may remind the person of the college’s expectations and policy, and educate them on what they might need to do to comply. If someone is repeatedly disregarding the safety expectations, you should notify your manager or department chairperson so they can follow up with the appropriate department, or uses Nazareth’s COVID-19 Concern Form.

Are in-person meetings allowed for staff and faculty on campus?

Faculty and staff are encouraged to use online conferencing, email, instant messaging or phone as much as possible and avoid in-person meetings, even when participants are on campus, including working in the same building.

If an in-person meeting is necessary, the meeting should be brief and held in a room where air is able to circulate outside (e.g. open windows) and seats can be spread at least six (6) feet apart.

How will classes be conducted in Fall 2021?

As vaccinations continue, we expect that the state will continue to ease restrictions during the summer. See Course Formats.

What’s available for professional development for faculty?

Opportunities for professional development, including developing high-quality online and hybrid instruction, continue to be offered through Nazareth’s Teaching and Learning Technologies (T&LT) and through Nazareth’s Teaching Integration and Innovation Lab (TIIL).

How can I help students who need help learning to use technology tools or developing skills to be successful in online courses?

For Nazareth-specific technical help materials, direct students to our Teaching Technologies student support site. This provides a number of student-centered resources, including two Moodle introduction videos as well as other written resources on Moodle, Echo360, Google Drive, and Zoom. Also, Nazareth students, faculty, and staff can access online training videos for 24/7 help on many technology topics and applications.

Online course success and preparation information can be found at our student readiness for online courses website. The Center for Student Success has also developed a tips for succeeding in online courses resource. If students are struggling with time management or study strategies in online or other courses, please refer them to the academic coaching.

As a faculty member, where can I get more information about synchronous components, active learning while social distancing, student accommodations, quarantine from restricted states, symptoms, students who may lack technology, and safety compliance?

Campus Life

What is the college doing to increase cleaning and disinfection of surfaces? 

The College is committed to exceeding all state and federal guidelines for cleaning and sanitizing buildings and facilities, including cleaning high-touch areas 5-10 times per day, 7 days a week. See Cleaning & Protection >

Are employee offices cleaned by custodial staff?

To prevent unnecessary contact, faculty and staff are responsible for cleaning and disinfecting their own offices and workspace and any shared (non-public) areas. Supplies will be provided via hallway sanitation stations which will be strategically located on all floors of academic buildings. These stations will include EPA registered spray disinfectant, paper towels, cleaning gloves and large bottles of hand sanitizer. Materials at these stations will be maintained and resupplied by Facilities. Employees are responsible for disinfecting their own areas. All shared equipment and/or workspaces must be cleaned and sanitized after each use. Faculty and staff are also responsible for bringing their own trash to centralized trash receptacles, located on every floor of every building. Vacuuming of private spaces will be by request only with a maximum of one time per week. As always, any special needs or attention should be communicated to Facilities and a work order will be created.

What about cleaning of classrooms? 

  • Classrooms will be thoroughly cleaned once per day prior to the first scheduled class by Facilities. Throughout the day, classroom high-touch areas will be sanitized as often as classroom schedules allow.
  • To sanitize classrooms between uses, faculty members will be required to sanitize the teaching areas of classrooms before and after a class session. This includes the instructor’s desk, computer, podium, whiteboard equipment (if used), etc. Each classroom will have cleaning materials inside the classroom, which includes EPA-registered disinfectant, paper towels, cleaning gloves, and trash receptacles.
  • Students are required to clean their individual desks upon entering and before leaving a classroom.

What about offices that have frequent face-to-face student interactions or a large amount of walk-in traffic? 

Along with workplace practices being developed with Human Resources, high traffic areas are being evaluated for additional safety measures, which include plexiglass barriers and office entrance controls. These items are in limited supply and are being prioritized for high traffic service areas.

Can I have guests on campus, including guest speakers in a class?

New York State requires colleges and universities to restrict visitors when possible and to keep visitor logs of those entering campus. To support that requirement, anyone who is not a Nazareth student, faculty, or staff member and not working on campus will need to register and be pre-approved at least 24 hours in advance, and then the visitor will receive a link on the morning of their visit to fill out the Nazareth visitor COVID-19 screening online. Health, Wellness, & Prevention

Is the COVID-19 vaccine required?

Yes. See COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement for more information.

After a student or employee tests positive for COVID-19 and completes isolation, could they still be infectious? Do they need retesting?

  • Nazareth follows Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Monroe County Department of Health guidelines to ensure that anyone released from isolation is no longer infectious. This includes the medical standard of following a symptom-based strategy to release from isolation. Generally, those in isolation will be released at the end of 10 days, as long as their symptoms are improving and they are fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medications. Although some employers require follow-up testing after an active infection, this is no longer the standard of medical care in the outpatient setting.

Are masks or other face coverings required when in public?

People who've been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 do not need to wear masks or maintain physical distancing, indoors or out, with some exceptions.

Can faculty wear a face shield instead of a mask, when teaching in person?

Generally yes, but it depends on the context. The state guidance calls for social distancing or a face covering. Nazareth is requiring both physical distancing and a face covering in class. The choice between a face covering or a face shield, or both, can be up to the faculty member, depending on what you're doing. If you're standing right next to any student and talking at greater length, a face shield may not be sufficient and a mask should be worn as well.

What do I do if I see a Nazareth community member — student, faculty, or staff — not wearing a mask or not social distancing?

The person may just need a friendly reminder.

You can use Nazareth's COVID-19 concern form to report COVID-19 health and safety compliance concerns, and the appropriate office will follow up. (Sufficient details need to be provided to be able to look into the concern.)

Health and safety on campus is a team sport this semester! And our team is only effective with shared effort, understanding, and respect.

COVID-19 screening: What is the College doing to monitor and contain the spread?

The College has developed an online screening tool for keeping our campus community and workplace safe during the pandemic. With this screening platform, students, faculty and staff self-assess for coronavirus risk factors to determine if they should report to campus for work and/or class. The daily screening process takes just a few minutes and can be completed on a computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access.

Will there be some level of testing as well as screening for both faculty and students? 

Nazareth College’s screening and testing approaches will continue to be based on the latest guidance from county health officials, local testing sites, and partners, as well as the guidelines on screening and testing for college populations from the American College Health Association and from New York state, and for student athletes by the NCAA.

What happens if someone gets COVID-19?

Nazareth works closely with the Monroe County Department of Health and has College protocols in place, including:

  • Arrangements for isolating students who test positive.
  • Plans for cleaning on-campus residences of affected students, work spaces of affected employees, and public areas of the College.
  • Working with faculty to make accommodations for extended student absences.
  • For a faculty or staff member with COVID-19, Nazareth Human Resources will work with that employee to administer any appropriate pay and leave measures. HR also will coordinate any potential work accommodations with the faculty or staff member's department manager.
  • Any lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases involving Nazareth students, faculty, staff, or visitors who've been on campus during their potentially contagious period are reported on Nazareth's COVID-19 Cases webpage, with no identifying information.

A student told me they need to quarantine or isolate. Do I tell them to be tested?

Refer the student to Nazareth Health and Counseling. It is not the role of faculty, coaches, or other staff to give medical directives or advice.

How many cases of COVID-19 would close the campus to in-person learning?

Nazareth's decision to restrict or suspend campus operations would be made by considering a combination of community and campus criteria, as outlined on the COVID-19 Cases webpage.

What cleaning and sanitizing products are used? I ask due to allergies.

The disinfecting spray that will be used for the hallway and classroom sanitation stations is the EPA-registered EcoLab QC57 peroxide-based cleaner (diluted to proper strength by the Facilities Department). The hand sanitizer (over 200 gallons of it) is Envirotech H706-1 BAC STOP 3A Instant Hand Sanitizer.
