Masterclass

‘Creating Your Own Path’

Remy Yulzari in from NYC after having seen his masterclass and improv class last year at Bernunzio's Music (downtown).  He is a classically trained (Juilliard and Paris conservatory) player, who is making his name now in Jewish heritage-inspired compositions.  His latest CD was release a few weeks ago, "Azafea", and I recently listened to it.  It's really a wonderful combination of all of his influences - Jewish music, spanish, jazz, gypsy, and of course, classical.  Remy was great with the students who came to his class last year, gentle but offering a wide range of advice, all of it immediately useable.  And he offered an improv class, based in Jewish modes, that was incredible (and I hate having to improvise, but he made us all feel comfortable, and took us through some very useful exercises).  The improv class, in my opinion, is the most useful thing he offers, since it gives the students a chance to experiment, and allows them to either stay in their comfort zone, or branch out without the fear of "playing wrong notes".
