YAMATO The Drummers of Japan

February 8, 2020 8 – 10 p.m.

This performance is planned to go on as scheduled. If this changes, the Arts Center will email or call ticket holders, as well as post on the website and social media.

Experience “the energy of life,” told through the percussive sounds of Japanese taiko drums.

Since its formation in Nara, Japan in 1993, YAMATO has traveled for performances in 53 countries. While paying respect to traditional taiko drumming, YAMATO has breathed new life into the art form.

They think of the sound of the drums – made of animal skin and centuries-old trees– as a pulse or heartbeat (Shin-on), the center of life and the source of power which pulsates within the human body.

YAMATO will perform “The Challengers,” a program created based on the feelings and experiences of its members as they rise to meet challenges we all face.

“Imagine two thousand years of samurais, shinto meditation and sake being built up and released through nine fiesty young drummers and their kits.” – Kpas (UK)

“a genuinely theatrical experience, delivered with balletic grace and infectious humor.” – Times Online (UK)

Tickets: $35-$60 (eligible for Arts Center subscriber discounts)

Sponsored in part by Susan and Steven Eisinger and Josephine M. Perini
