Rochester City Ballet has received its first National Endowment for the Arts grant to commission The Chautauqua Institution’s resident choreographer, Mark Diamond, to create a world premiere ballet set in Paris at the turn of the twentieth century. The story is adapted from Alexandre Dumas's novel La Dame aux Camélias,

Armand has moved to Paris to study poetry. He is staying with his old friend Francois who is a man of many interests and is a connoisseur of the joyful nightlife that Paris has to offer. The best way to introduce Armand to this exciting world is to take him to the hottest nightclub in Paris. The minute you step inside there are no boundaries to the color, sensuous characters, and timeless experiences of music and hedonism. Armand is quite thrilled by all of this until he sets his eyes on Lisette, the club’s beautiful headline entertainer. Being naive and hopelessly in love, he begins a painful education into the real world of the Joie de Vivre (joy of life).
