The Rising Tide of Anti-Semitism: How We Can Respond in the Courtroom and as a Community

Presentation by local attorney experts and discussion on the recent rise of anti-Semitism in our communities and across the country, the role of First Amendment law and whether it protects hateful speech and conduct, how crimes are classified as hate crimes in NY and factors relevant to pursuing these cases, as well as how our legal and local communities might respond. Naz's Konar Center for Tolerance and Jewish Studies is partnering with the Monroe County Bar Association and the Levine Center to End Hate for this event.

Hava Leipzig Holzhauer, Esq. – Ms. Leipzig Holzhauer is the Executive Director of the Konar Center for Tolerance and Jewish Studies and a former prosecutor and regional director of the Anti-Defamation League. She will discuss the current landscape of anti-Semitism.

Donald Thompson, Esq. – Mr. Thompson, a partner with Easton Thompson Kasperek Shiffrin, LLP, is a criminal defense attorney who has handled First Amendment and hate crime cases. He will discuss hate speech and acts and when and how the First Amendment’s protection of speech and assembly apply.

William Gargan, Esq. – Mr. Gargan, a prosecutor with the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, has prosecuted hate crimes. He will discuss the application of criminal law to conduct and speech.
