Becoming an engaged citizen

Giving back has reached a more sophisticated level for Kelsi Barnholt, a sophomore majoring in occupational therapy. She had volunteered in high school, including serving meals to people in need and serving as a class officer. But at Nazareth she is more engaged in understanding the root causes and seeing the big picture as she gives time to help, both through volunteering and through courses in sociology and religious studies.

In July 2015, she and three other Naz students spent a week at a leadership training conference at Grand Canyon National Park for college students who lead alternative break service trips. Barnholt will lead a student trip to Washington, D.C., that focuses on providing direct service and learning about homelessness. “In high school, I was a volunteer,” she says. “At Nazareth, I consider myself an active citizen.”
