"Knowledge and Skill Development for Effective Supervision"

This workshop is free to all therapists who have acted as a Nazareth    University Creative Arts Therapy Clinical or Internship Supervisor within the previous academic year (2023-2024).

Presenters:

Shirley Sharp, LMSW

Shirley has been a  member of the Nazareth University social work faculty since 1977.  She is director of field education in the undergraduate program and teaches foundation BSW practice courses.  Before teaching at Nazareth, Shirley practiced in varied settings, from family service to residential treatment.  She consults and offers training in Interactional Supervision for agencies in the community.  She co-facilitates a sexuality education program in the county jail with colleague Mark Primus.

Sarah Brasse, LCAT, ATR-BC, ATCS

Sarah is currently an Adjunct Professor and the Internship Coordinator in the Creative Arts Therapy Program at Nazareth University. Sarah has over fifteen years of experience working as an art therapist. Her current work focuses on supervision practices working with graduate students during their on campus and off campus internships as well as offering private supervision groups for art therapists working towards their art therapy license and board certification. Prior to her current position, Sarah has worked with veterans transitioning back home from Iraq and Afghanistan, children on the autism spectrum, children and adults with developmental delays, and children and adults with mental health disorders.

Laurie Keough, LCAT, M.S.Ed, MT-BC

Laurie  is the music therapy program director at Nazareth University. She has been a music therapy clinical supervisor for over 30 years, supervising in the community and in the Nazareth Lipson Music Therapy Clinic. Laurie teaches Principles of Music Therapy Supervision in the graduate music therapy program, and has taught continuing education courses on the topic of supervision at the local, regional, and national level. Her clinical areas of interest and expertise include working individuals living with neurodevelopmental disorders, medical complexity, acquired neurological impairments, and dementia.

Course Description:

This course will provide an overview of the Interactional Supervision model by Lawrence Schulman. Participants will learn about the key tenets of the supervision model, discuss applications to Creative Arts Therapy supervision, and explore ways of using the creative arts with supervisees at each stage of the supervision process.

Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to…

  1. describe the central importance and function of supervision, viewing supervision as a profession “in its own right”. (CBMT BCD V.B.21)*
  2. discuss the key elements of the Interactional Supervision model and its application in creative arts therapy supervision. (CBMT BCD V.B.21)
  3. integrate an understanding of legal, ethical, and inter and intra cultural supervision into the practice of supervision. (CBMT BCD V.B.2,3,9,10,11)
  4. develop one creative arts method they could use with a supervisee within this model. (CBMT BCD V.B.21)

*Certification for Music Therapists Board Certification Domain items. Relevant for music therapists only.

Schedule:

10:45-11:00 - Break

11:00-12:30 - Introduction to the Interactional Supervision Model: Part Two

12:30-1:30 - Lunch

1:30-2:30 - Small group discussion and creative expression

2:30-4:00 - Sharing creative expressions and discussion

4:00-4:15 - Closing and Evaluations

Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course.

Written cancellation must be received via email by June 5th for the full refund of the workshop fee.  Please send an email to Colleen Weldgen (cweldge7@naz.edu) if you need to cancel.  Programs may be canceled by the Nazareth University Creative Arts Therapy Department based on low attendance.  Full refunds will be issued.
