Extension (15 credits)

This program extends your New York state teacher certification to teach in bilingual settings at the same grade levels as your original certification.

Program is Ideal For

  • Certified teachers who speak English, have a high level of Spanish proficiency, and seek additional coursework to teach bilingual education, working with native Spanish speakers who are learning English.

Career Information

  • Appropriately certified Spanish bilingual teachers are in high demand. The U.S. Education Department (2014) identified bilingual education and English language acquisition as high-need fields that are experiencing nationwide teacher shortages at all developmental levels. 
  • Bilingual teachers work in districts with high numbers of Spanish speakers to help them succeed academically in English and in Spanish.

What to Expect
  • Complete the program in one calendar year (one or two courses per semester, including summer)
  • 50 hours of fieldwork

  • Teaching Content Areas in Spanish Bilingual Classroom 
  • Native Language Arts and Literacy Instruction for Spanish Speakers
  • Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition
  • Foundations of Bilingual/Multicultural Education 
  • Culture and Context in TESOL/Bilingual Curriculum and Assessment

Application process
  • Complete and submit the annotation/extension approval form, including signed permission of the program director.
  • Deadlines are on a rolling basis for fall, spring, and summer terms.
