Neal Powless '98 - From "The Rez" to Movie Producer

The Center for Life’s Work is pleased to present the Life’s Work Speaker Series, featuring accomplished alumni who return to campus to share their stories and personal journey in pursuing their life’s work.  Our first speaker in this series will be Neal Powless who will deliver a talk on his life's work spanning his experiences in professional sports, student affairs/higher education, cultural consulting and film production.

 Neal J. Powless ‘98 is an athlete, scholar, filmmaker, and a traditional member of the Onondaga Nation and Eel Clan.  Powless started his lacrosse career while completing a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Nazareth College and went on to play for five professional teams and competed in six World Lacrosse Championships.

 After completing his master’s degree in counseling at Syracuse University, Powless served as a counselor for Career Services and later as assistant director for the Office of Multicultural Affairs at SU, where he is currently a Ph.D. Fellow at the Samuel Irving Newhouse School of Public Communications.

 As a filmmaker, Powless co-produced the major motion picture Crooked Arrows and NY Emmy nominated documentary The Game of Life: Heart and Spirit of the Onondaga. Powless and his wife co-founded Indigenous Concepts Consulting to bridge Native American ideals and culture with organizations and individuals all over the world.
