Individual Sonorities: Works for Solo Viola

Alexander Trygstad, viola

The viola was overshadowed for centuries by the violin as a solo instrument. The 20th century yielded a great proliferation of new works for solo viola unmatched in previous eras. This increased amount of repertoire in conjunction with the rising virtuosity of viola soloists brought the viola to the front of the stage as an instrument with an individual voice. With the exception of a transcription of a cello suite by J. S. Bach, this program features solo works composed for the viola in the 20th and 21st centuries by Paul Hindemith, Garth Knox, and more.

This concert will be live-streamed.
