Center for International Education

English Language Institute

Students enrolled in our program receive intensive instruction in the four components of English language: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Classes are offered in summer sessions and in the spring and fall semesters, during which students are in classes for 20 hours per week. All students participate in pre-semester placement testing and are placed in classes appropriate for their proficiency level.

The English Language Institute is accredited through the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA). Nazareth College is able to issue an I-20 form to obtain a student visa.

We offer three program options:

Conditional Admission for Degree Programs

Students interested in enrolling in a degree program after studying in the English Language Institute should apply to both Nazareth College Admissions and the American Language Institute. Please contact Dr. Sam Song for more information.

Academic Intensive English Program (AIEP)

Throughout the academic school year, we offer semester-long courses geared towards preparing students for success in U.S. classrooms. This Academic Intensive English Program is offered during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Summer Language Institute

During the summer, we offer various 2-3 week English language and cultural immersion programs. These programs are designed to provide prospective students/scholars and professionals with enriching language and cultural experience to meet their academic and professional needs. For more information, please contact Dr. Sam Song, Director of the Institute, at 585-389-2959

Dr. Song has worked in international education development for two decades, both in China and in the United States. His interest stems from his personal experience.

“My choice to study abroad two decades ago has turned out to be one of the most rewarding decisions in my life,” Dr. Song says. “It not only has broadened my intellectual horizon but it has also given me a much wider choice of careers.”

He holds a B.A. in American and British Language and Literature from Anqing Teachers College in China, an M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Fresno Pacific University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities).

His academic interests include language and culture, language curriculum development, and educational policy and curriculum development. “My teaching philosophy always focuses on inspiring students to explore on their own through facilitating the learning process,” he says.

“Nazareth is an ideal higher education institution where students can receive a solid liberal arts education, essential preparation for both advanced education and career development. Everything on the Nazareth campus is set in a way that students will feel at home from the day they arrive.”
