Finding Aids

In an archive items are not organized as they are in a traditional library. A single item can belong to multiple categories, defying simple classification. Finding aids are keys designed to help researchers locate items of historical relevance to a specific subject. Our finding aids have been created to help patrons interested in learning more about Nazareth topics. Once you have located an item of interest, please feel free to contact the archivist preferably by email for further assistance or to schedule an appointment.

Historical Note: Nazareth Normal School was formally dedicated on the 27th day of December, 1898, on a site purchased for the purpose as early as May 11th, 1884. The site was at Dewey Ave. and Augustine Street. Nazareth Normal School carried on in the building on Augustine Street until 1928 when it moved to the present location of the University.

Nazareth College was housed at 981 Lake Ave., also known as "the Glass House" from its beginnings in 1924 until 1929. In 1926 a residence hall on Fairview Heights, off Augustine St., was purchased to house out-of-town students. The Sisters of St. Joseph purchased property along East Ave. where they intended to move the college. However, out of necessity, the building constructed in 1928, became the new Motherhouse and the college moved to the former Motherhouse on Augustine Street. It wasn't until 1942 that the East Ave. campus adjoining the Motherhouse was established. Three buildings made up this original campus: The Motherhouse (now called Golisano Academic Center), Smyth Hall and Medaille Hall. In 2000 the college signed documents to purchase the SSJ Motherhouse, infirmary and 75 acres of land from the Sisters of St. Joseph. The property transfer was complete in 2003.

Scope and Content Note: This collection contains histories, photos, newspaper articles and other materials pertaining to buildings and structures which were or are currently part of Nazareth University, as well as information about the bookstore, pool and chapel now contained in the Shults Center. In addition to promoting annual giving funds by the alumnae and parents, the college, through the work of the Development Office, began receiving grants, many on an annual basis, from corporations and foundations, both local and national, and from friends of Nazareth. The Development Office was also responsible for the establishment of a deferred giving program.

Historical Note: In 1957 the library moved from its original location in the basement of Smyth Hall to a separate, newly constructed building. At this time the collection consisted of approximately 40,000 volumes. The new building featured the large stained glass window depiction of St. Jerome, Latin translator of the Bible. It was a gift from Theodore J. Zornow and Cyril R. Zornow in memory of their father Theodore A. Zornow. The window was designed by John C. Menihan and built by Pike Stained Glass Studios.

In 1977 a groundbreaking ceremony for the remodeling of the library was held and by 1978 the construction was complete. The Nazareth College Library was then renamed in honor of Lorette Wilmot, long time benefactor of Nazareth and wife of former trustee James P. Wilmot. The remodel more than doubled the facility's usable space and provided shelf space for more than 240,000 volumes.

In 1996 extensive renovations were completed in the library. The photographs in this time period were taken by Linda Carol Williams.

In October of 2006, the Monsignor Edward J. Byrnes collection was donated to Syracuse University Library Special Collections Research Center.

Biographical Note / Historical Note / Chronology:

In 1924 Nazareth University was founded and empowered to grant B.A. and B.S. degrees. A program for the preparation of secondary school teachers was included in the original curriculum. At the same time, the Nazareth Normal School, founded in 1898, was preparing Sisters of St. Joseph and other religious teachers for teaching in parochial schools. In 1937 a four year curriculum was adopted by the Normal School with the 4th year to be pursued at Nazareth College and the degree of B.S. in Education granted by Nazareth College. In 1950 Nazareth Normal School became the Elementary Teacher Education Division of Nazareth College with the college empowered to grant M.A. and M.S. degrees in English, history, education and music (this was discontinued from 1966-1971) In 1957 an emergency program in elementary teacher education was approved and led to a B.A. degree.

Prior to 1990 the Office of Continuing Education was responsible for all continuing education courses, credit and noncredit, undergraduate and graduate, as well as the Center for Elder Learning (which changed its name to Center for Lifelong Learning in Nov. 1983) After 1990, graduate courses fell under the auspices of Graduate Studies. Continuing education was one of the first 600 institutions to offer Elderhostel, which were 3-4 week noncredit courses held during summer. Italian Week, originally part of Elderhostel, was later transferred to Casa Italiana. The Center for Lifelong Learning offered 35-40 noncredit courses held during fall and spring semesters. These courses were aimed at retirees and were usually 8-10 weeks long. Noontime at Naz was a series of 1 hour lectures presented by Nazareth faculty, held under the auspices of the Center for Lifelong Learning.

In 1999 the Office of Continuing Education changed its name to Office of Part-Time Enrollment Services.
