Interlibrary Loan

General FAQs

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan, or acquisition of materials on your behalf from another library, is a free service that is available to faculty, staff and current students. To begin using Interlibrary Loan, click on Login to ILLIAD above.

What can be requested through ILL?
  • Books (including those listed as 'Lost' or 'Checked Out' from our Library)
  • Music Scores
  • Microfilm & microfiche
  • Theses & Dissertations
  • Media Materials, including DVDs, Videos, CDs, Audiocassettes, Computer Software.
  • Photocopies of journal articles and book chapters (In compliance with U.S. Copyright Law)

What cannot be requested through ILL?

Materials owned by Naz that have a circulating capacity within/or outside the Library (i.e. Reference Material, Course Reserve Material, etc.) are not eligible for interlibrary loaning.

Can I request textbooks?

While we do not ban requesting textbooks through ILL, this practice is HIGHLY discouraged for the following reasons:

  1. Due to high demand these are extremely hard to acquire and are often cancelled due to the item being in use, or in restricted/course reserve collections at owning libraries;
  2. The wait period for this type of item to arrive can exceed 10-20 days;
  3. Loan periods are NOT for the entire semester. While most libraries extend one renewal, second renewals are rare. You will need to return the book when the renewals are denied.
  4. These books are subject to frequent and immediate recalls. Retaining a book past its due date results in a higher cost borrowing the item vs. purchasing it, and the suspension of your Library privileges.
Can I request e-books through ILL?

E-Books cannot be requested through ILL. E-Books are restricted by publisher licensing contracts for use by an owning library's students and faculty and therefore cannot be loaned out to another institution's clientele.

Username/Password problems? What do I do?

ILLiad users should use their Nazareth University username and password credentials (example: Username and Password required for Moodle, Nazareth Gmail accounts and NazNet).

How do I renew something?

Renewals can be submitted through ILLiad if your material:

  • allows renewals (check the book band), and;
  • is not due or overdue, and;
  • this is the first renewal.

To renew, log into your ILLiad account. Under "Checked Out Items" locate your piece and click the Transaction Number. Then click the "Renew Request" link located in the upper left corner.

Second, or subsequent renewals, can be made by logging into your My Library Card or by contacting the ILL Office.

The ILL Office will contact the Lending Library regarding your renewal request and will update the Due Date in your ILLiad record if the Lending Library grants it. We will e-mail you the Lending Library's response.

If your request has been denied you will need to return the material by the due date provided in the e-mail.

You may place another request in the ILLiad system using the Clone Request feature to obtain a copy of the same piece from another library.

Document Delivery - what is it?

Currently enrolled Nazareth students, plus faculty and staff, can request scans of Nazareth-owned materials.

What is Document Delivery?

We offer a retrieval and hold, or retrieval and scan service for Nazareth owned materials. If we own it and you need it, submit a request through ILLiad and we'll do the rest! Held materials will be available for pick-up at the Main Circulation Desk. Scanned materials are delivered electronically to your ILLiad account.

Turn around time will be 24-48 hours during normal work hours. Evening and weekend hours are limited.

Note on Restrictions

Due to U.S. Copyright Law the Library is prohibited from copying an entire work, multiple chapters from a single work, or multiple articles from one journal issue.
