Published October 16, 2015

Dr. Mario E. Martínez, Vocal Studies Coordinator, has been appointed as arts consultant for the Ministry of Culture in his native country, the Dominican Republic. Martínez is charged with reviewing and evaluating the programs and institutions within the Ministry of Culture that deal with the different expressions of the vocal arts at the national level.  Martínez will also work in the creation of new administrative structures, curricular development and design, as well as training programs for performing artists and educators. Martínez has previously worked as arts consultant for the Ministry of Culture and the National Office of Fine Arts in the Dominican Republic.

Martínez maintains an active career as performing artist, stage director, arts administrator and academic professor. He recently performed the role of Silvio in the opera Pagliacci, by Puccini, at the National Theater in the Dominican Republic, to critical and popular acclaim. Upcoming performances include the baritone solos for Handel’s Messiah with Symphoria, at Hamilton College, and Orff’s Carmina Burana at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

In 2014, Martínez was appointed Governor-District of New York for the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), and he will serve as On-Site Coordinator for the upcoming Central New York-Finger Lakes National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions this fall, here at Nazareth College.

This summer Martínez taught a Performance Techniques Seminar at the National Conservatory of Music, and Vocal Pedagogy and Choral Methods courses for the Ministry of Education in the Dominican Republic. During this coming winter recess, Martínez will teach at Shandong Normal in China as part of the first faculty delegation from the Nazareth College Music Department.
