The New York State Education Department has appointed a Blue Ribbon Committee of the NYS Regents to Improve Outcomes for Boys and Young
Men of Color, and the workgroup will meet on Monday, November 9, at Nazareth College. In attendance will be NYS Regents
Chancellor Merryl Tisch, Workgroup Chair Regent Lester Young, Jr. and NYS Education Commissioner
MaryEllen Elia. Also in attendance will be Regents Wade Norwood, Andrew Brown, Betty Rosa,
James Cottrell, Victoria Finn, Beverly Ouderkirk, Judith Johnson and Catherine Collins.
Nazareth College President Daan Braveman and Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren will provide welcoming and
introductory remarks. Seventy seven members of the Blue Ribbon Committee are also scheduled
The charge of the Workgroup is to develop and propose a series of policy recommendations that
reflect informed judgement, innovative best practices and collaborative efforts that must be taken
across the PreK-20 pipeline to right the inequities that have hampered the educational
opportunities, and ultimately life opportunities for boys and young men of color in New York
State. The Blue Ribbon Committee’s role is to provide input to the Regents Workgroup that will
help advance a policy agenda for New York State specifically in the areas of Educational Policy,
Legislative Policy and Budget.
Media are invited to the Blue Ribbon Committee opening session and the Young People’s Panel
which commences at 9:30 AM.
