Nazareth College Adds Financial Planning Minor that is Approved by the Certified Financial Planning Board

Published October 01, 2019

Nazareth College's finance majors interested in working as certified financial planners can complete a new financial planning minor — the only program in Rochester approved as a CFP Board Registered Program — providing high-quality education to become eligible to take the Certified Financial Planning (CFP) exam.

The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. (CFP Board) registers financial planning education programs at the college or university level that meet specific criteria.

"The CFP Board is pleased to approve the program at Nazareth College as a CFP Board Registered Program," said Susan John, CFP®, chair of CFP Board's Board of Directors. "As student interest in financial planning as a career continues to grow, we anticipate that Nazareth's program will contribute significantly to the number of qualified candidates seeking to attain the CFP® certification, the standard of excellence for competent and ethical financial planning."

Nazareth's program director agrees. "Nazareth is excited to offer this high-quality program to students interested in a career in this growing and fulfilling field," says Cathy Leverone, CPA, MSF, clinical assistant professor and finance program director at Nazareth. "Our program meets the CFP Board's rigid standards for preparing students for the CFP exam. Our program prepares our students to effectively guide their clients to a secure financial future. CFP certification will give our students multiple advantages in the financial planning field."

Research reported by the CFP Board has found that that certified financial planner professionals:

  • Earn 26% more than other financial advisors, adjusted for years of experience
  • Typically find improved client trust, confidence with clients, and technical expertise
  • Attract more ultra-high net worth and high net worth clients to their practices than companies without CFP professionals.

Zach Mallally, a junior majoring in finance, appreciates Nazareth pursuing the national recognition. "The approval of Nazareth as a CFP Board approved educator comes at a perfect time to ensure I will be prepared for my career as a future certified financial planner."

The CFP Board is a Washington, D.C.-based independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to benefit the public by granting, upholding and promoting the certified financial planner (CFP®) certification. Those who earn the certification are distinguishing themselves among their peers by meeting CFP Board's education, examination, experience and ethics requirements. Students completing the financial planning program at Nazareth will have met the Education requirement for CFP® Certification Examination administered by CFP Board.

The CFP Board currently oversees more than 300 programs at more than 200 institutions.
