Getting to know: Josh Newby, Assistant Professor in Chemistry & Biochemistry

Published September 14, 2020

What led you to this career?
I had some great mentors along the way; my high school chemistry teacher and my undergraduate and graduate research advisers all helped me recognize what I found interesting and had talent for, specifically, working with chemical instrumentation. I've been working with and building hardware since my undergraduate days and it never gets old. It's also fun to pass along my knowledge on these instruments. I kind of feel like the high school shop teacher who helps students learn to work on cars, but instead of cars we work on lasers, high vacuum systems, and electronics. It's really fun to help students figure out how to solve scientific problems and how to build their own solutions.

In our current environment I'm sure it has been difficult for you to introduce yourself to others here at Naz. What would you like the Nazareth community to know?
I grew up on a family farm in central Illinois and didn't actually plan to go to college (let alone graduate school). My mother was adamant about me being the first of my family to go to college, so I agreed to give it a try. In hindsight, it seems that this may have been a good choice and I've had a lot of fun! During my academic journey, I've taught at several schools and have engaged in many, interesting roles (e.g. hiring committee for a Provost, grant panelist for NASA, and being a faculty adviser for student gaming and e-sports).

I'm currently living in Geneva where my morning run takes me along the shore of Seneca Lake. Don't be fooled. I only run so I can justify ice cream later in the day. I tend to have a work hard play hard mentality. In my downtime I enjoy scifi, games, DIY, and hiking.

What energizes you at work?
Working with passionate students. There are few things better than connecting with people who are excited by science! Some of my favorite experiences have included working with students that want to learn. It never gets old seeing a student light up when they really get into a project.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

  • You are more capable than you think you are.
  • Take more time to relax and enjoy life as it happens.
  • Don't let disappointment get you down. The Star Wars prequels will pass.
