Nazareth University’s wide range of academic programs earns it a key Carnegie Classification

Published May 28, 2025

Nazareth University is among the top 1% of small colleges and universities that offer students a robust range of majors despite a smaller size. Nazareth is one of only 58 institutions in the Professions-focused Undergraduate/Undergraduate-Doctorate Small, part of the updated Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

Since its inception in 1973, the Carnegie Classification has been the leading framework for categorizing U.S. higher education. The 2025 redesign updates that mission.

The new classification from the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching now recognizes colleges and universities based on a fuller set of dimensions, including a wider look at the types of degrees they award, the subjects in which they award degrees, and the size of the institution. Carnegie notes Nazareth’s academic offerings in health professions, visual and performing arts, psychology, education, and business, among others.

"Earning this new Carnegie classification confirms Nazareth's unique position in higher education. We offer a special blend of professional and liberal arts and sciences programs, with both breadth and depth that is often more characteristic of larger universities,” said Nazareth University President Beth Paul. “As a smaller, more personalized university, we excel at engaging each undergraduate and graduate student in transformative experiential education. We are proud to have so many Nazareth students and alumni working as positive changemakers in the Greater Rochester community!"

Carnegie also has a new Student Access and Earnings Classification that examines the extent to which an institution enrolls students who reflect the communities it serves and whether students go on to earn competitive wages compared to peers in their area. Nazareth is among 12% of colleges and universities that earned Student Access and Earnings Classification: Lower Access, Medium Earnings
