Nazareth School of Music faculty member Django Klumpp places third in international guitar fest

Published April 10, 2026

Django Klumpp, adjunct guitar professor in School of Music and music therapy, recently won third place in the Elias Barreiro Young Artists Competition in New Orleans. This was the festival's ninth year, featuring artists from the United States, Poland, Spain, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Israel, and more. It paid tribute to and honored the late Elias Barreiro, a renowned guitarist and educator who passed away.

Klumpp performed "Concertino" by Johann Kasper Mertz, "Prelude" from BWV 998 by Johann Sebastian Bach, and "Rito de los orishas, II. Danzas de las diosas negras" by Leo Brouwer in the competition’s semi-finals and finals, which featured an incredible array of young guitarists from the U.S., Costa Rica, and Thailand.

“Making it as far as I did while competing amongst some of the country's best guitarists is an honor and privilege only beget by the determination and hard work I have put in since making the decision to make a career out of music,” said Klumpp, who is fairly new to the classical guitar competition scene. “And from an educator's perspective, I am always proud to find different ways to be a first-hand living example of what a career in guitar looks like to my own students, in a world with so much uncertainty around the arts and making a living in music.”
