Nazareth University Professor and Fulbright alumnus Scott Campbell, Ph.D., recently spoke in Hungary at a historic celebration honoring two milestones: the 80th anniversary of the Fulbright program and the 250th anniversary of the United States. Nearly 130 Hungarian and American Fulbright alumni, university partners, diplomats, and stakeholders gathered Jan. 26 at the Hungarian National Gallery in Buda Castle.
Campbell, a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Pannonia in Hungary 2007-2008, provided a historical anchor with his presentation, “American Ideals in the Declaration of Independence.” Campbell is now Nazareth’s Fulbright Program adviser, and he serves as chair of Nazareth’s philosophy department and as undergraduate and graduate program director for American studies. He was also awarded a Fulbright-Hays Grant in 2005 to tour Australia and learn about the cultures of Australian Aboriginal people.
His time as a Fulbright scholar in Hungary led to the creation of Nazareth’s master’s program in American studies, which includes the option to study abroad at the Institute for English and American Studies at the University of Pannonia in Veszprém, Hungary. He also founded America Week, an annual international conference on American studies that continues to draw Nazareth faculty and students to Hungary to present papers.
“It is the mission of the Fulbright Program to promote intercultural understanding, and I am committed to that mission,” said Campbell. “For almost 20 years, Nazareth has been engaging in fruitful cooperation and academic exchange with the University of Pannonia in Veszprém, Hungary. It is deeply rewarding and meaningful for our students to have these kinds of cultural opportunities.”
Campbell is a past recipient of the Pannonia Award, given by the academic senate at the University of Pannonia for positive contributions to international education.
