Monroe Regional Teacher Residency Consortium

The Monroe Regional Teacher Residency Consortium is a paid teacher residency program designed to prepare teachers for a career in suburban or rural Monroe County.

  • Earn your master's degree in teaching with initial certification
  • Earn New York State initial certifications in either:
    • Childhood Education (Grades 1–6) and Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Childhood Level (Grades 1–6)
    • or Early Childhood Education (birth - Grade 2) and Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Early Childhood Level (birth - Grade 2)
    • or Adolescence Education Content Area (Grades 7-12) and Teaching Students with Disabilities Generalist (Grades 7-12)
    • or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL, Grades Pre-K - 12)
  • Participate in a 15-month paid teacher residency in a Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES or Monroe One BOCES school district: co-teaching four days per week with experienced mentors and working one day as a substitute teacher
  • Receive $15,000 toward your tuition and a minimum of $20,000 pay from the district
  • Strong consideration for employment in Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES or Monroe One BOCES districts following graduation and successful completion of the residency program. Employment is not guaranteed.

Program Overview

Residency year schedule

  • Our 15-month residency program includes a full academic year in a Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES or Monroe One BOCES school district, co-teaching four days per week with experienced mentor teachers and serving one day per week as a building substitute.
  • Graduate coursework will begin the first summer you enroll, continue throughout the school year, and conclude the following summer. 
  • You move through the program in a cohort for enhanced community and support.

Teacher certification

Upon completion of the residency year, graduates are eligible to apply for New York State initial teaching certification in one of the following:

  • Early Childhood Education (Birth-2nd grade) and Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Early Childhood Level (Birth-2nd grade)
  • Childhood Education (Grades 1–6) and Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Childhood Level (Grades 1–6)
  • New York State initial teaching certification in Adolescence Education (Grades 7-12) and Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Adolescence Level (Grades 7-12)
  • or New York State initial teaching certification in TESOL (prek-12) 

Affordability/Financial support

  • Receive at least $15,000 of tuition assistance
  • Receive a minimum of $20,000 in pay from the school district you are placed in 
  • You also may be eligible for Nazareth’s Educational Partner Network discount, and Teacher Opportunity Corps II benefits (for eligible applicants)

Post-graduation commitment

You will have strong consideration for employment in your partner school district upon graduating.

This program is funded by the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDL) Teacher Residency Program and operates as a partnership of Nazareth University, University of Rochester Warner School of Education, Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES, Monroe One BOCES, and select school districts.
