First year of college for future physician

Connected to the community

In addition to her courses, three first-year experiences off campus supported her goals.

Pediatric urgent care: Through Nazareth’s Partners for Health program, I get paid to work one night a week at a local pediatric urgent care center. I shadow physicians, staff the front desk, and disinfect and prepare rooms.

Working with children: I gain experience with children by providing homework help at a weekly job at Wilson Commencement Park in Rochester, through Nazareth’s Partners for Serving program.

Learning about another culture: I spent a week during the January school break on the “alternative break” trip to San Diego, learning about the Chicano community, which connects with my interest in working with underserved populations.

Reflection on year one

“My first year of college changed my perspective on my place in the world. I feel empowered and capable of enacting change around the issues that concern me in the world, instead of feeling paralyzed by worry.”
