Cost:

  • $10 for current Nazareth Social Work field instructors and Creative Arts Therapy (CAT) site supervisors, Nazareth Social Work and CAT department-appointed clinical instructors, Nazareth CAT and Social Work adjuncts for current academic year, and current Nazareth full-time Social Work and CAT faculty.
  • $ 25 for previous Nazareth Social Work field instructors and CAT site supervisors, Nazareth Social Work and CAT department-appointed clinical instructors, and all Nazareth alumni (BSW, MSW and CAT programs).
  • $ 50 for all other community practitioners.

Continuing Education

2 CE credits available for Social Workers, Licensed Mental Health Counselors and Licensed Creative Art Therapists.  All participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Course Instructor

Jeffrey Footer is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Master CASAC-G with a Master of Social Work degree from the Greater Rochester Area Collaborative MSW Program. He possesses a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Applied Economics from Cornell University. Throughout his career, teaching and training have been his passion. He has been an Adjunct Professor in the Human Services department of Monroe Community College for 12 years. He also teaches for the Social Work department at Nazareth College and SUNY Brockport for the last 8 years. Jeffrey has 23 years of progressive experience in the Social Work and Addiction Field. As the Associate Director of the Integrated Clinic-G Substance Use, he provides supervision to a team of 18 therapists and 2 peer advocates. At the integrated clinic, he provides a client centered, trauma informed, cultural humility approach to mental health, substance use and problem gambling treatment. During Jeff's career, he has provided treatment for clients with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and special needs who struggle with mental health, substance use and problem gambling. He is also a trainer for the Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) for problem gambling and addictions.

Course Description:

The Nazareth College Department of Social Work is pleased to present a half day Continuing Education event: "Gambling: the Hidden Addiction.Featured speaker, Jeffrey Footer (Associate Director of the Integrated Clinic-G Substance Use) is an expert in the field.Gambling Addiction or Problem Gambling is known as the “hidden addiction.” Unlike alcohol or drug addiction, it is very difficult to detect the progression of gambling addiction and often, gambling addiction progresses without detection. There is an alarming lack of knowledge about gambling, particularly underage gambling, among professionals. This workshop will provide professionals with knowledge and skills relevant to addiction awareness, prevention, and intervention in general as well as gambling addiction specifically. 

Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to…

1. Describe the history of gambling and relevant definitions

2. Identify addiction risk and protective factors, with particular attention to gambling

3. Explain emerging trends in gambling including specific to Underage, Colleges, online

4. Categorize typical and atypical gambling behavior among youth and adults and list the criteria for problem gambling

5. Analyze evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies

Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course.
 
Course Schedule:

9:00 AM-10:00 AM

Introductions, history of gambling and relevant definitions, identify addiction risk and protective factors, with particular attention to gambling.

Explore emerging trends in gambling, underage gambling, college settings, and online gambling
 
10:00 AM – 10:45 AM
 
Typical and atypical gambling behavior among youth and adults and list the criteria for problem gambling analyze evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies
 

10:45 AM – 11:00 AM

Cancellation and Refund Policy:

Written cancellation must be received via email at least 24 hours prior to the training for full refund of workshop fee.  Please send an email to Colleen Weldgen (cweldge7@naz.edu) if you need to cancel.  Programs may be canceled by the Nazareth College Social Work Department based on low attendance.  Full refunds will be issued.
