Course Description:

Scientific research indicates our sense of selves is deeply anchored in a vital connection with our bodies. We’ve learned that the wounds of trauma are held deep within the human body, and therefore to fully heal, treatment must include somatic elements. The intrinsic mind/body connection of yoga provides the practitioner with the vital link between wounds stuck inside the body and the deep healing needed.

The yoga program run by the Trauma Center at Justice Resource Institute has helped thousands of people dealing with complex trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), from survivors of chronic abuse to war veterans. Research done by the Trauma Center showed that the Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) model is empirically based and significantly reduced symptoms of PTSD.

This workshop will cover the theoretic underpinnings and key aspects of the model, methodology, class dynamics, an overview of the research, and an experiential exercise.

Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to…

  1. To learn the ways in which PTSD and complex trauma impact the brain and human development.
  2. To learn how trauma theory, neuroscience and attachment theory create the theoretic underpinnings for the Trauma Center-Trauma Sensitive Yoga model.
  3. To provide an understanding for how interoception and empowerment through somatic experience and a mindfulness practice are useful tools as an adjunctive therapy for trauma treatment.

Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course.
