What to expect in a dorm

  • We'll leave a door tag on your door so you’ll know when the work has been completed.
  • Dorm furniture (mattress, bed frames, desks, chairs, etc.) may NOT be removed from residence hall rooms., or you may be charged for missing furnture If you have a unique situation, contact Residential Life, 585-389-2480.
  • Bed raising or lowering: Make a Youcanbookme appointment if you want your bed raised or lowered, and you'll need everything off the bed and removed from under it. Renovated triples with custom black furniture cannot be modified.

Heating

  • Kearney Hall, Medaille Hall, Founders Hall, Lourdes Hall: These buildings have a central steam heating system which is controlled by a building management system. There is no fan to push warm air into the spaces. We rely on convection to heat the rooms in these buildings. With this in mind, it is best to not block the fin tube heaters under the windows. The more open space at the heaters the better the heat will work in your room.
  • Kearney only: Using the white thermostat with the dial in the corner of the room by the window (check both corners), turn the dial between 1-3 for less heat and 5-8 for more heat. The process of cooling or heating can take between 30-60 minutes for the room to adjust. To prevent over/under heating please move dial only one number at a time and wait 30-60 minutes. You may also open the window to rapid cool, but must close and lock the window completely in order to actually heat.
  • O’Connor: The heating system in this building is hot water heating. There are no fans to force the heat into the spaces. This is a convection type heating system. It is recommended not to block the heaters under the windows there-by providing the most heat to the rooms.
  • Lyons and Breen: In these buildings each apartment has its own heating and cooling systems. Based on the time of year, Facilities sets the units to the proper mode of operation. Facilities will set the controls to a reasonable temperature for all occupants of the suite.
  • Portka Hall: This building is a water heating or cooling system with a fan to move the air. Each suite in this building has its own temperature control. Facilities will change the main water heating or cooling system to the proper mode based on time of year. Therefore in the fall of the year, facilities will change the system from cooling to heating. When this happens your thermostat will be set to heating, do not change it back to cooling, as the cooling in the entire building will be off and only heating will work.
  • Elizabeth George Hall: The heating system in this building is a steam heating system with individual room control. Most rooms have a thermostatically controlled valve. This will allow you to set your own space temp. There are no fans to push the heat into your room. This is a convection type system. Therefore it is recommended not to block the heaters under the windows.
