Nazareth Student Heads to Capitol Hill for National Colleges & Universities Panel

Published January 19, 2016

The New American Colleges and Universities (NAC&U) will host several events in Washington, DC, from January 19-21, 2016 that will spotlight its members’ collective mission and approach to teaching and learning. Nazareth College is a member of NAC&U and is honored to have one its students, Brian Rosiek, take part in a panel discussion in Washington, D.C., to share his experience of how integrative education improved the quality of his college experiences and prepared him with real-world skills.

Events begin with a Capitol Hill briefing on Tuesday, January 19, from 12 – 1:30 p.m. in the Rayburn House Office Building. The briefing, “Holistic Approaches to Postsecondary Persistence and Success: Integrating Liberal Education, Professional Studies and Civic Engagement,” will feature a panel of NAC&U students and recent alumni. The students will share their experiences of how their integrative education, including undergraduate research, business consulting, and multidisciplinary team projects improved the quality of their college experiences and prepared them with real-world skills.

There will be another briefing on Wednesday, January 20, from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. at the National Press Club on the same topic but with a different group of students, moderated by author and NAC&U senior scholar William Sullivan.

As the Association of American Colleges and Universities Annual Meeting gets underway at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on Wednesday, NAC&U will present a pre-conference workshop from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. on “Supporting Student Learning through the Holistic Department.” NAC&U, with support from The Teagle Foundation, has developed an integrated “holistic” structure for academic departments to more effectively and efficiently manage faculty work, while supporting more time for faculty-student interactions.

The final event will be a panel discussion during the Annual Meeting on Thursday, January 21, from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. titled “The Power of Integrated Learning: Higher Education for Success in Life, Work, and Society,” which will again feature students and be moderated by author and senior scholar William Sullivan. Brian Rosiek, Nazareth College, Rochester, N.Y.; Victoria Ochoa, St. Edward’s University; and Nicole Crossey, Widener University will share their experiences of how their integrative education improved the quality of their college experiences and prepared them with real-world skills.
