Nazareth Named Finalist for 2014 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

Published December 09, 2014

The Corporation for National and Community Service announced that Nazareth College is one of only four colleges nationwide named a finalist on the 2014 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in the category of Economic Opportunity. More than 800 colleges and universities applied for a prestigious spot on the honor roll. It recognizes institutions of higher education that support exemplary community service programs and raise the visibility of effective practices in campus community partnerships.

There are four categories for the honor roll: general community service, interfaith community service, economic opportunity and education. Only four higher education institutions are named recipients of the President’s Award (a distinction Nazareth held in 2013) and 16 other schools are named finalists, four in each category.

The Economic Opportunity category recognized Nazareth for its service programs that build economic independence, increase family stability, and create a more sustainable and resilient community. Three project examples are The Clairvaux Farm Service Retreat in Earlville, Md.(Nazareth College sent a team of 20 people to Earlville, MD to help improve the financial well-being of formerly homeless persons at Clairvaux Farm); LifePrep, (a college based transition program for students with disabilities aged of 18-21+ who have a goal of competitive employment upon graduation); and Nazareth School of Management Somali Community of Western NY Project (Two Nazareth information technology students worked to create a small computer lab with six computers for Somali refugees in western N.Y. and created a website for SCWNY)

The other 766 institutions are named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. In addition to being one of four finalists in the Economic Opportunity category, Nazareth earned three spots of distinction on the list under the general community service category, the education category, and the interfaith community service category.
