Nazareth College Representatives to Speak at TEDxRochester, Nov. 15

Published October 16, 2014

Nazareth College is excited to have four representatives presenting at TEDxRochester on Saturday, November 15 at the East High School located at 1801 East Main street, Rochester, N.Y. 14609. Shanna Jamanis, Dawn Volger-Elias, Jeremy Bagley and Ted Baumhauer will represent Nazareth as they share their insight and knowledge with the Rochester community. Jamanis and Volger-Elias will present together on how they are working to change relationships between children with autism spectrum disorders and their care givers and teachers, by changing the way we look at their challenges. Bagley will join another member of Rochester’s community to share their thoughts on how veterans are integrated into a vet-friendly environment. Baumhauer will bring "entertrainment" to the audience in a leadership program.

Jamanis (pictured above left) is an associate professor and chair of the department of inclusive childhood education. Volger-Elias (pictured above middle) is an assistant professor of the communication sciences and disorders department. Both are co-directors of I-SPAN at Nazareth, the Interdisciplinary Specialty Program in Autism at Nazareth.

Jamanis and Volger-Elias come from a different discipline and field, but they share the same ideas about what individuals with autism bring to the community. They believe your whole perception could change if you flip the way you think, talk, and interact about the challenges characterized with autism.

Bagley (pictured above right) is the coordinator of veteran student enrollment and support services in the Nazareth veterans’ affairs office. He will join Eric Wheeler, coordinator for the academy for veterans’ success at Monroe Community College, to reinforce the ideas that Rochester is a vet-friendly community. Both strongly believe that sharing stories and backgrounds of being deployed should not be the point of veteran talk. Instead, they aim to break stereotypes and focus on what veterans have done for the Rochester community. Rochester veterans should be known more for the good they have brought back to the community rather than the ribbons and salutes they received.

Baumhauer, an adjunct professor at Nazareth in the School of Management, delivers unforgettable and entertaining presentations, corporate coaching and leadership development programs. From the shop floor to the boardroom, he brings to life the struggles of becoming a leader and creating a group. More than training, not just entertaining, it’s EnterTrainment!

TED, which began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, created a program called TEDx, which is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. TEDxRochester is celebrating its sixth year and is one of the oldest TEDx events in the country. Live speakers and TEDTalks video will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group at the one-day conference. TEDxRochester’s mission is similar to TED’s mission in that both are determined to share “Ideas Worth Spreading”; but in a way that shows the world, and more importantly, Rochesterians themselves, the vast potential and brilliance that exists in this dynamic, evolving city.
