Nazareth College’s Hickey Center for Interfaith Studies and Dialogue is pleased to present the Fifth Annual Global Citizenship Conference. This event is a full-day conference for high school students to provide tools to respond to intolerance, improve religious literacy, and possess the etiquette required to work in a pluralistic world. Karen Magnuson, editor and vice president of the Democrat and Chronicle, will be the guest speaker. She speaks from 1:00 - 1:30 p.m. in the Otto A. Shults Community Center gym. For more information, please email the Hickey Center for Interfaith Studies and Dialogue at interfaith@naz.edu. Nazareth College is located at 4245 East Avenue, Rochester, N.Y. 14618.
The conference begins at 9 a.m. with opening remarks from other community leaders sharing “words of wisdom” with the teens, including Jennifer Leonard, president and CEO of Rochester Community Foundation, and Norma Holland, anchor at 13WHAM News and host of Many Voices, Many Visions. The teens then break into sessions like Encountering World Religions and Cultures and Experiencing Globalization: One for All and All for One.
The Global Citizenship conference was pioneered in 2011 and is geared towards shaping high school students into future leaders with the strong core value of understanding diversity in various environments. Students are able to be more aware of the diversity of culture and religious traditions among people and how it shapes their lives. Engagement in dialogue among the participants will encourage a better understanding of diversity, allowing them to expand their knowledge and taking that into future communities. The Hickey Center for Interfaith Studies and Dialogue hopes students will be able to take the tools they learn at the conference into real life experiences to better integrate diverse environments.
