Nazareth Names Steitz Center for Service Learning Director

Nazareth College has named David W. Steitz as the new director of the Center for Service Learning. Steitz is also an associate professor of psychology and the director of the Gerontology Program at Nazareth College.   

The director of the Center for Service Learning provides leadership for the development, implementation, support, and evaluation of service learning initiatives that advance the university’s academic and civic engagement mission. The director, in collaboration with campus and community partners, creates opportunities to participate in a wide range of civic engagement and community-based service learning activities and initiatives. The director educates for social justice and lifelong civic engagement; collaborates with faculty and staff in all campus units on teaching, service, and scholarship related to best practices in service learning; cultivates and sustains mutually beneficial community partnerships; and actively promotes a coordinated, organized and visible presence for service learning in the curriculum.​

Steitz earned his Ph.D. in experimental psychology with a specialization in cognitive aging from Syracuse University. His scholarship focuses on intergenerational service-learning and the scholarship of engagement and has published in the Journal of Gerontological Social Work, Gerontology and Geriatrics Education, and Educational Gerontology. He currently serves on the St. John’s Foundation Board with St. John’s Senior Services and the Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NNORC) Engaged Partners Board and the Senior Options For Independence (SOFI) Partners Board, both with The Fairport Baptist Home.
