Lisa Fullam Hosts Second Installment of the 2017-18 Shannon Lecture Series, October 12-13
Lisa Fullam, associate professor of moral theology at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, will present two lectures in as many days. On Thursday, October 12, at 7 p.m., Fullam will talk Practicing Doubt in the Pursuit of Truth in the Forum of the Shults Center. On Friday, October 13, Fullam will discuss Sex and Human Flourishing: The Witness of LGBTQ Catholics. This lecture will be in Linehan Chapel of the Golisano Academic Center at 1:30 p.m. Nazareth College is located at 4245 East Avenue, Rochester, N.Y., 14618. This event is free and open to the public.
Fullam’s interests in science and religion has produced two doctorates: one in veterinary medicine at Cornell University, and another in theology at Harvard University. Now, as an associate professor, she explores the Catholic tradition of virtue ethics as a resource and framework for addressing perennial and contemporary ethical issues. She regularly hosts public lectures and writes books and articles outside of the classroom.
A sampling of essay titles illustrates the breadth and depth of her work: "Toward a Virtue Ethics of Marriage: Augustine and Aquinas on Friendship in Marriage"; "Joan of Arc, Holy Resistance, and Conscience Formation in the Face of Social Sin"; "Sex in 3-D: A Telos for a Virtue Ethics of Sexuality"; "Ethics in Spiritual Guidance"; "Bioethics and Public Policy" (with William R. O'Neill, S.J.); "Why Ordination Matters: A Reflection from Jamaica"; and "Juana, S.J.: The History (and Future?) of Women in the Society of Jesus."
Fullam is the author of The Virtue of Humility: A Thomistic Apologetic and has co-edited with Charles E. Curran three volumes in the Paulist Press series, Readings in Moral Theology: The Sensus Fidelium and Moral Theology, Ethics and Spirituality; and Virtue Ethics.
This year marks the centenary of Father William H. Shannon's birth in 1917. The 2017–2018 Shannon Chair Lecture Series gratefully celebrates his legacy of wisdom and witness to faith, justice, and peace. Calling for mercy and tenderness, Pope Francis continually reminds us of our common humanity, which inspired this year’s Shannon Lecture Series subject: Reclaiming Our Common Humanity.
