Students and Professor Create Music Recording Label

Published November 01, 2018

Two Nazareth music/business majors working with their management professor have launched a record label that gives students the means to gain music recording, business, and marketing experience right on campus.

Naz Recordz was founded by Spencer Kornrich ‘19 and Breyana Clark ‘20, with the guidance of Professor Roy Stein, who co-directs the music/business program. That degree program includes a recording course, and Nazareth opened a recording studio on campus in 2016. They are excited to produce music for people to enjoy and to foster artistic growth.

"Nazareth College has so much talent among our student body as well as faculty,” says vocalist Clark, who’s been part of the campus Jazz Ensemble, Rock Ensemble, and Concert Choir. “It is almost a crime not to showcase it!" Off campus, you can find her with the Silver Arrow Band providing musical entertainment for weddings, corporate events, and birthday parties — or out jamming at local venues with Red Beard Samurai and the JB Dojo.

The label gives students the opportunity to represent and record aspiring musicians at Nazareth College and beyond. Working for the label also can give students experience in marketing, public relations, social media management, recording, accounting, music, business, and more.

Nazareth College is all about providing students with experiential learning opportunities. This is just that,” says Clark.

The label provides production, recording, distribution, promotion/marketing, and video/photography services.

“I want to create and foster a fun environment where students can learn about the process involved in producing and marketing music, while helping them get their music heard by a larger audience,” says Kornrich, who plays drums in a student band called Circuit Juicebox and has played in Nazareth’s Wind Symphony, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Rock Ensemble. “This new record label will provide students with hands-on experience working in a music business setting, as well as give a competitive edge to the Music Department at Nazareth College."

Naz Recordz is designed to serve current students, faculty, alumni, and local artists/musicians.

The label’s first recording artists: Baker Street, “a funky jam band with some rock and blues influences” that is comprised of current Nazareth students and alumni. To learn more about this band, you can “like” Baker Street Music on Facebook, or follow them on Instagram, @BakerStreetMusic.

A celebration of the grand opening of the record label is happening:

  • 5:30 p.m. Friday, November 2

  • Colie’s Cafe (ground floor of George Hall)

Baker Street will perform live, and refreshments will be available.

The co-founders say it took a lot of hard work and research to plan and launch the record label.

"From what I understand, the college has wanted this for quite some time,” says Clark. “Professor Roy Stein saw something in me. He had a vision and trusted that I would help execute it. Couple that with my love for music, helping others, a great partner, and viola! I am now the proud co-founder and co-president of a record label."
