School of Music Concerts and Events in December
From percussion, rock, and jazz to chamber music — there is something for everyone this December at the Nazareth College Arts Center including a special performance from the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) featuring Bach, Martin, and Mozart. All events are free and open to the public with the exception of the Holiday Gala concert and the Sunday Matinee Series with the RPO. See below for select concerts that are live streamed.
Percussion Ensemble Concert

The Nazareth College Percussion Ensemble will feature a selection of works from both contemporary and classic composers, exploring a wide range of instruments, sounds, melodies, and rhythms. The group features three undergraduate students — Logan Fingar, Anthony Varacchi, and Sarah Ullyett — along with Joshua Rowlinson, a graduate student in Nazareth’s performance & pedagogy program. The ensemble will be led by Nazareth alumni Brendon Caroselli.

Rock Ensemble Concert
Sunday, December 5, at 8 p.m., Wilmot Recital Hall
The Nazareth College Rock ensembles will perform their fall 2021 concert including an eclectic variety of rock/blues music ranging from Nina Simone’s Do I Move You to the guitar heavy Burnin’ For You by the Blue Oyster Cult. Watch as their roster of 12 musicians perform a variety of songs during this high energy concert!

Jazz Ensemble and Lab Band Concert

This is the fall semester concert for the large jazz groups. Lab Band, Jazz Ensemble, and the NazJazz Family ensemble will perform a variety of big band and large jazz ensemble works from the 1930s through the present. Works include pieces by Glenn Miller, Lennie Niehaus, Thad Jones, Brad Batz, and many others. All three groups will be conducted by Professor Brad Batz, director of Jazz Studies.

- J.C. Bach - Overture to Lucio Silla
- Martin - Concerto for 7 Winds, Timpani, Percussion, and Strings
- Mozart - Symphony No 41
This second concert in the Sunday Matinee Series begins with the Overture to Lucio Silla by J.C. Bach, which was written in 1775 when the composer was 40 years old and at the prime of his career (Mozart also wrote an opera about Lucio Silla in 1772, but he was 16 at the time). Frank Martin’s Concerto for Seven Winds, Timpani, Percussion and Strings was written in 1949 for the Bernische Musikgesellschaft. The seven solo instruments are so different in character and playing technique, which makes the piece a brilliant study in composition and balance. Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 — the “Jupiter Symphony” — is the longest (and last) of the great composer’s symphonic works. Regarded by many critics as one of the greatest symphonies in classical music, it is not known if it was ever performed during Mozart’s lifetime, but your RPO performs it here for you.
