Student employment is a best practice supporting student success, retention, and the development of career-readiness skills. The degree of these positive effects can depend on supervision, work conditions, and institute policies and processes. Supervisors are the linchpin of a positive student employment experience.
Log into Handshake to begin searching for work-study jobs and non-work-study jobs.
Any Nazareth student enrolled in at least one credit (except International students must be certified full time) or registered for the following semester (if employed during the summer break).
There are several different forms of documentation students can use to prove their eligibility to work in the U.S. View a list of acceptable documents that meet federal requirements. It is to a student’s advantage to demonstrate eligibility to work before starting to search for on campus employment. Only original, unexpired documents will be accepted for this purpose. These can be shown to staff in the Payroll Office in the basement of Smyth Hall, Room 40. No student may begin working without proving their eligibility to do so.
Handshake: All on-campus jobs, both work-study and non-work-study (Regular employment) should be listed in Handshake. throughout the year. Most opportunities are filled at the beginning of the fall semester
On-Campus & Part-time Job Fair: During the weekend before fall classes begin, Nazareth holds a Job Fair which is the best place at the beginning of the academic year to find a job.
In addition: Some supervisors also hire students who simply ask if they have an opening. Don't be afraid to "ask around" in addition to using Handshake and attending the Job Fair.
Work Study is a form of federal financial aid that allows departments to hire eligible students at a reduced cost (typically 50%) to the department but pays the student the same payrate as any other student. This makes the student with work-study a more viable candidate financially.
To determine if you have work-study, contact Financial Aid (finaid@naz.edu or 585-389-2310). Eligibility for work-study does NOT guarantee you a job. You must apply and be accepted for an available position.
Work-study provides a paycheck every two weeks, based on the number of hours worked. Because students receive pay directly, work-study does not credit their term bill. See the Nazareth payroll page for the work-study pay rate.
If you are unsure whether federal work-study is part of your package, please contact the Financial Aid Office at 585-389-2310 or e-mail finaid@naz.edu.
Apply to as many departments as possible to increase the likelihood you will be offered a position. If you have not secured an on-campus job by the end of the first week of classes, make an appointment to talk to your Career Coach as soon as possible.
Yes, you can have more than one on-campus job as long as the total number of hours worked does not undermine your academic efforts (While individual circumstances vary, we recommend you not work more than 10-12 hours a week while taking classes).
A number of off-campus employers from nearby locations post jobs on Handshake for Nazareth University students. Some off-campus employers attend the On-Campus & Part-time Job Fair held at the beginning of each fall semester.
