Course Description:

Overview

Eating  disorders—including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating  disorder—are serious conditions that impact social, emotional, and physical health. Without effective treatment, they can become long-term struggles and, in some cases, even be life-threatening. These disorders often arise from a complex interplay of genetics, personality traits, and environmental factors, such as childhood experiences, social comparison, traumatic events, and cultural beauty standards. While the causes vary from person to person, several evidence-based interventions can support individuals in achieving lasting recovery. This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of eating disorder treatment, covering epidemiology, clinical features, assessment, diagnosis, illness progression, and medical complications. Additionally, it will explore research-backed approaches and practical skills that can be applied in real-world settings.

Objectives

  1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of eating disorders, including their characteristics, common warning signs, contributing factors, and potential consequences.
  2. Gain insight into healthy relationships with food and body image, the ways in which eating disorders disrupt these relationships, and their impact on psychological and physical health, as well as overall quality of life.
  3. Learn about appropriate treatment services and support systems, including when and where to refer individuals with eating disorders to ensure their physical, psychological and nutritional needs are met.
  4. Develop an awareness of multidisciplinary care teams, including the range of professionals involved in eating disorder treatment, their respective roles, and how they collaborate to provide comprehensive, effective care.
